If you have followed these lessons on how to make a successful blog from the start, you will notice that in the earlier lessons, we have discussed Blog Mapping, Blog Host, Blog Template, and now, Blog URL. In this lesson we will introduce you to Blog URL, how to choose the right URL and the reasons for choosing the right URL for your blog.
To make a successful blog, you don't have to gamble anything rather, you should use every chance to your advantage. That's how a successful blog comes to be in no time!
Because these lessons assume you are a beginner who doesn't know anything about blogging, we will take every lessons from the scratch which is why we will take it from the meaning of URL.
What is URL?
Uniform Resource Locator which is also sometimes referred to as Uniform Resource Identifier is a synonym to what is popularly called Web Address . This is where your blog domain or website domain points to. In essence, all the files and documents on your blog can be linked to/from from the URL.
How Can You Choose the Right URL for your Blog?
#1. Let the URL Speak for itself : if your business is about medical consultation then, let your blog URL be something like consultmedic.com . Or, if your business name is Abby rendering medical services then, your URL can be abmedconsult.com (if you want your business included).
Advantage(s):
a. Anywhere the URL is encountered, the content of the URL can be easily perceived.
b. To remember the URL, you don't have to rack your brain all day.
#2. Choose A Short URL : though it is not necessary that you use a very short URL, it should be as short as possible. While making sure that it is short, remember not to ignore he rule #1.
Example:
Abbymedicalconsultservice.com can be abmedconsult.com
Advantage:
a. A shortened URL can easily be remembered.
b. A shortened URL does not consume as much space to write on.
c. Visitors prefer to type short URL on their address bar rather than searching Google which may bring very related and competitive results.
#3. Choose URL that's Within Your Niche : do not use a URL that's outside your business name or niche so that you may not have abtechservice.com instead of abmedcosult.com
#4. Stick to Universal or Related TLDs : TLDs are .com, .org, .info, .net etc. In the other words, TLDs are the suffixes you have following your domain name. A blog that is owned by an organization should have either example.com or example.org domains but should not be example.tech or example.net. Otherwise, your URL might be misleading and very unprofessional.
#5. CountryRegion Specific TLDs is Alright : though it is not a must, using country specific TLDs such as .com.ng, .co.uk, .com.jp, .com.in etc. is a good practice.
